The Australian Shepherd actually originated in the USA, not Australia! Developed in the 19th century , it was bred to work as a herding dog on ranches. It is unknown where the name came from, but it is believed it may have to do with its ancestors. Like most breeds in the herding/working group, Australian Shepherds tend to bore easily, which can lead to behavioral problems. Being bred to work all day makes for an energetic and purpose driven dog. This breed requires a lot of attention and time every day from its owner. If the Australian Shepherd does not receive the attention needed their vast energy may be expressed through unwanted digging or chewing. If trained properly these dogs are great with active children, and love to play, jump and run. They learn very fast and enjoy being challenged, always trying to out-think their livestock, or in the case of a family pet, their owners!

Most PetCare Clients Insure Australian Shepherds with:
Ellee Mae was just 4 months old when I was doing renovations on the kitchen. I had mixed up a bucket of wallpaper remover and water and went upstairs. I was barely out of the room before I realized the danger of the bucket and an active puppy. When I returned Ellee Mae began to vomit almost immediately. She was brought to emergency where she was kept overnight and then for one more day at her own veterinarian's. I am so happy to have had PetCare Insurance to help cover the expenses. I learned a very valuable lesson that day.
