Dog Breeds - American Water Spaniel

Return to Breed List

The American Water Spaniel was developed in the mid 1800’s as a small hunting dog bred to be good in the water, on the marsh and land. Thought it is not definite, it is believed that this breed originated in Wisconsin and is their state dog. The true origins of this dog breed are not known but it is thought that the breed is a cross of a Field Spaniel, curly coated retriever and the now extinct English Water Spaniel. They are talented hunters and are used to hunt quail, duck, pheasant, rabbit, grouse and even fish! They are named American Water Spaniels because they are avid swimmers. This friendly and energetic breed has a strong eagerness to learn, and is obedient towards its owner. Though they do show friendliness to strangers they can be very protective when it comes to its owner making them fairly good watchdogs. The American Water Spaniel is a relatively rare breed, and is one of the few breeds known to be developed in the USA.

My husband and I never wanted to be faced with a situation in which we were unable to provide the best medical care possible for our two dogs, Shadow and Chance. In 2002 Chance was diagnosed with a kidney abnormality that required removal. Without this expensive procedure Chance would have died. We never hesitated about going forward with the surgery because we knew PetCare was there for us. Five months later Chance repaid us by saving our son's life! While my son was sleeping Chance came to find me and started growling, barking and whining which is something that is very uncharacteristic for him. I dropped what I was doing and discovered my 5 month old son choking in his crib. My husband and I know that if it had not been for PetCare we would not have Chance and we shudder to think what may have happened to our son that day.
